In order to deliver the best and safest program for our students, all programs will move to online learning for Summer 2020. We are excited to deliver dynamic and engaging courses and co-curricular activities online.

Math

 

Class Title Math – The Year in Review
Description: Students heading into or leaving their sophomore year of high school are expected to have master certain mathematics skills and core concepts, this course will explore and reinforce the fundamentals of algebra and geometry which includes an understanding of consumer math, number systems, measurements and ratios, geometric shapes and calculations, rational numbers and polynomials, and how to solve for the variables.  This course is essential for students who have taken and passed their Algebra and Geometry classes in the Spring Term and are scheduled take their Regents Exams need for graduation in the upcoming Fall Term. Students will be given the opportunity to earn prizes and gain insight on how math is used in everyday life.

Class Title Code Breaking
Description: Cryptography introduces students to the exciting practice of making and breaking secret codes. This course intersects the disciplines of mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Students will also learn how cryptography influences history and how it’s used in modern day conveniences like computer passwords, electronic commerce, and ATM cards. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to encrypt and decrypt messages, invent their own ciphers, and learn some mathematical concepts that are often not seen until college!

Class Title SAT Math
Description: For 11 grade students who have taken the SAT exam before and is scheduled to take it in August or September. The SAT Math prep will review four areas of math: number and operations; algebra and functions; geometry and measurement; and data analysis, statistics, and probability.  This course will also include practice exams and daily practice of the methods and activities designed to improve on your previous scores.

Science

Class Title UP UP and Away
Description: This course will explore Newton’s Third Law from theory to practical purposes. Students will learn about how things fly, the effect of force, acceleration, and propulsion, with respects to balloons, air craft and rockets. By the end of this class students will create a presentation that will explain their own workable aircraft (rockets). There will be a prize given to the student whose rocket travels highest and furthest.

Foreign Language

Class Title Ciao, Come Stai
Description: This course will be an intensive introduction to the fundamentals of Italian. It is designed for students who have no background in the language. and will cover basic language skills.  It will provide students with a foundation of how to communicate in a variety of social situations, such as introducing yourself, talking about daily activities, describing what you do for work, writing and reading simple texts, such as an e-mail, giving and getting directions, asking about the weather and telling time. It will also cover basic grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary as well as explore the Italian culture, including daily life, films, cuisine, education and vacationing sites.

Computer Science

Class Title Game Design
Description: Participants will be introduced to game design and game design concepts, emphasizing the basic tools of game design. The goal of the program is to improve students’ skills in exact thinking, analysis/design, and problem-solving, while providing an enjoyable path to more formal study of computing and programming, and a foundation for utilizing animation systems.  For the course project, participants will create either a digital game or a board game. This course will leverage, a game editor that uses a block based programming language to allow anyone to create games.

Academic Writing

Class Title Art of the Essay
Description: How can you write essays that make readers nod and smile instead of yawn? Students will read and discuss a variety of well-crafted essays, and articles while focusing on their own style of writing. They will learn how to develop persuasive, research based essays and how to write rhetorical analysis of topics that they feel passionate about. – essays, films, etc.

Class Title Storytelling in the Digital Age
Description: The COVID-19 pandemic and the racial inequality and police brutality against people of color are some of the biggest news stories of our lifetimes. You will report and write stories that show how it disrupted your life and your community. Individual and team-reported projects will highlight the progress that’s being made, and the work that still needs to be done. You will bring attention to the unsung heroes of the pandemic and peaceful protests around country, while developing creative ways to advocate for change. You’ll write journal entries in the first person, and profile people who live in your community. Because this course will be conducted via Zoom, if appropriate you will be able to safely interview people within your household or community, while following strict social distancing guidelines.
