How is Urban Scholars responding to COVID-19 (coronavirus)?

  • The Urban Scholars has followed City College of New York Campus procedures and is keeping abreast of CDC recommendations on COVID-19. We’ve shared news and information with our program participants as it comes available.

 

What sets Urban Scholars apart from other summer programs?

  • All programs have their own uniqueness. So does the Urban Scholars, we pride ourselves on being a program that cares about our program participants. One of our primary goal is to provide all participants with a happy, healthy and rewarding summer experience in a safe productive environment.  We do this by ensuring that each participant demonstrates consistent improvement in their self-esteem and self-confidence;  make new friends and learn from new experiences that create memories which last a lifetime!

 

What can I expect from the program?

  • You can expect the support of the Urban Scholars to help you succeed and excel in high school, as well as informative workshops that will help you prepare you for college.

 

Who can attend the summer program?

  •  Rising 8th, 9th, 10th and 11grade students, with an 80 average, from any target area high school can apply to the Urban Scholars program.

 

When is the last day to enroll in the program?

  • The last day to enroll in the program is April 1st. However due to COVID-19, enrollment has been extended.

 

Where can I find the application form?

  • The application is available upon request. Visit our website at uspny.org and complete an interest form. An application will be emailed to you.

 

How does attending the virtual summer program improve my chances of being accepted to a college?

  • Attending Urban Scholars Virtual Summer Enrichment will allow you to explore who you are, allow you to network with your peers, take college oriented courses, and will prepare you for success.

 

How will students interact with instructors and staff members?

  • Classes and workshops will be held on Zoom and/or Google Classroom.

 

Will I get college credits?

  • There will be no college credits given for Summer Courses.

 

How are classes selected for students?

  • Students will register for classes with a program coordinator. Required classes such as Math, will be chosen for you. You can choose your electives.

 

How many courses are students allowed to take?

  • Students are allowed to take 3 classes.

 

What is a typical day for students?

  • Students will sign in and attend classes via Zoom and/or Google Classroom, and complete assignments and/or projects.

 

How long is the summer program?

  • The Summer Program is a total of 5 weeks (June 24 – July 30), Pre COVID it was 41/2 -5 weeks of classes and activities followed by a 7-10 day college tour.

 

What time will classes begin and end?

  • Daily classes begin at 9:00am and end at 1:30pm. Each class is 75 minute long – Period 1 (9-10:15am), Period 2 (10:20-11:35am), Period 3 (11:40am-1pm) 

 

Will students have breaks in between classes?

  • Yes.  There is a  5 minute brake between classes to allow participants log into the class.

 

How and when do I enroll in courses?

  • You will speak to a program coordinator to register. A copy of your final transcript is needed to register.

 

How do I check my course schedule?

  • A schedule will be created for you. A copy will be sent to your email.

 

Will students need to purchase books and supplies for the summer program?

  • No.

 

Are summer courses graded?

  • Yes. An overall grade will be given at the end of the program.

 

Will students need to maintain a specific GPA during the summer courses?

  • No.

 

What are the academic expectations for students?

  • Students are expected to complete assignments in a timely manner.

 

What is the cost of the program?

  • There is no cost to participate this year.

 

Will students receive a stipend? If so, how much?

  • Stipends depend on participation and length of time a student has been enrolled in the program.

 

Are there social activities planned during the program?

  • Yes.

 

What rules and regulations will I be required to follow while participating in the program?

Rules and regulations are outlined in the code of conduct.

 

Will the program include homework?

Yes.

 

Who can parents contact for concerns while their students attend the program?

Parents can send an email to a program coordinator.

 

Is class attendance mandatory?

  • Yes.

 

What happens if students miss a class or are late to class?

Students need to send a letter of excuse to a program coordinator. Excessive missed classes or showing up late can get students removed from the class.

 

Will students need an ID card?

Typically yes, if we were on campus however, this year is virtual. ID cards are not necessary.

 

Will students physically meet at any point?

No.

 

Can students switch classes?

Students must request a change no later than the first day of class.

 

Can students withdraw from classes?

Yes. An exit interview will be required.

 

Will students be given exams?

Yes.

 

Can students make up missed days/work?

Yes. Students must speak with their instructor.

 

How many students are accepted into the program?

A total of 40 students are accepted in the summer program each year.

 

Is the Summer Program mandatory to be in Urban Scholars?

While you have the right to choose how you spend your summer, we strongly encourage you to participate in the summer program.

 

How can students prepare for the Summer Program?

Complete the Summer Program application and submit all required forms. Be present and prepared to learn!
