As a college preparatory program, we emphasized both college and career readiness, assess and success. All programs and services are designed and implemented with the single-minded purpose of providing our participants content knowledge as well as instill general habits and skills they must possess in English, Mathematics, Reading, Writing Communication, Teamwork, Critical thinking, and Problem Solving. Also provided are the social skills needed to be prepared for any postsecondary education or training experience, including study at two- and four-year institutions leading to a postsecondary credential (i.e. a certificate, license, Associate’s, or Bachelor’s degree) and to qualify for and succeed in the postsecondary job training and/or education necessary for their chosen career (i.e., technical/vocational program, community college, apprenticeship, or significant on-the-job training).
Throughout the Academic Year the following Services are offers:
After-school academic tutoring; Regents and SAT Test Prep; Study skill development; Saturday enrichment; Academic advising; Cultural activities; Motivational and cultural speakers; Career Development; Financial aid workshops and advisement; College admissions workshops and assistance; Educational travel Field trips to college campuses through out the US.
An Urban Scholar’s week doesn’t end on Friday. Participants dedicate their Saturdays preparing to conquer some of education’s biggest hurdles. We offer P.S.A.T. and S.A.T. preparatory courses in addition to critical reading and writing courses, gender-specific group workshops, Leadership and character development, college admission prep — scholarship workshops, college entrance essays assistance and optional recreational classes.
Career Conversations are structured roundtable activities designed for our participants to interact with successful alumni and designated professionals role models. These events are meant to be small networking sessions of about 6-12 students designed to offer students the chance to get answers to their most pressing questions about a particular career fields.
In the Urban Scholars Program, students stay active throughout the year. Participants have the opportunity to take part in many different activities. Job shadowing, ice skating, whitewater rafting, boating, going on scavenger hunts and attending career fairs are just a few of the things the past scholars have been able to enjoy in between their coursework.
Students’ high school experiences often do not prepare them adequately for postsecondary education and the world of work. Urban Scholars is focused on college and career readiness (CCR). We create a rigorous college-bound culture, holding all participants and stakeholders accountable to the highest standards for academic success and a supportive culture. All participants are supported within and beyond, the classroom by program instructors, tutors, and are given multiple opportunities for additional enrichment and extended learning engagement.
Urban Scholars offers an annual six-week instructional commuter and residential program at a local university. Participants have the opportunity to experience college life and take courses in the following areas: mathematics, technology, sciences, critical writing, modern literature, a foreign languages and SAT Prep. All academic courses are designed focus on student discovery, reasoning, and communication. The summer curriculum is aligned with NY state and national standards (inclusive of mathematics, literacy, and science), focused on participants graduating from high school ready for college.
